Time out/chill out room

Hi,

My MS is 6 and I suspect (as do his teachers) that he has Aspergers.  He is in mainstream school spending half his time in class and the other in an enhanced provision unit.  Generally he copes well with school and is beginning to interact with one or two other pupils there.  ES has a dx of ASD and ADHD but the two boys are completely different.

At times MS can be somewhat aggressive and lately has begun to headbut his 3yo brother, growl and spit at me, his Dad and some teachers (the spitting is something he uses to show he's stressed).  At other times he's bubbly and funny.  He's like a dynamo - sometimes if we hold him he can sit still but you can still feel the energy buzzing about inside him (does that make sense?)

We live in a 3bed house and my two older boys share.  MS is very reliant on ES and won't go to bed without him going at the same time etc.  It seems the best arrangement - YS is a bit of a pickle at night!

Anyhow, we've got a long thin cupboard at home - about 1mx2m and we're wondering about turning it into a small chill out room for MS - somewhere that he can go and be quiet.  He enjoys the sensory room at school so we'd plan to do something along those lines.  We'd put in lighting etc (obviously!).

Does anyone have any ideas?  Colours etc?  We want this to be somewhere that he feels he can go when he wants - his own space.  At the moment ES is happy having his top bunk and doesn't seem to need any extra "alone time" but MS definitely needs time to be by himself.  There doesn't seem to be any option of rearranging the bedrooms and we can't afford to move.

Thanks, GG

  • You could put a bubble lamp or fibre optic lamp that changes colours or fish tank. The possibilities are endless.

If you can do it, why not? Everybody needs there own little space of calm, even the dog has his den.

My little boy seeks out the best place for him depending on how he is feeling as his senses are all over the place. So you would have to work out what his calming to him. There is no point in using lights or specific colour if that is the one thing he cannot tolerate.

Fidget toys may be good to release energy. We have a trampolene and have a trampet for inside.

Spitting will always be unacceptable behaviour so I agree it definately needs to be channeled into something different using small steps.

    Hope this helps,
