Disability Living Allowance

My son is 14 and has just been diagnosed with Aspergers.

Can anybody give me any advice on filling in the form correctly for us to claim DLA. There doesn't appear to be any specific area to fill details of him, or is it just a case of putting general details in the section that I feel sums up his different traits and symptoms?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi there.

I've just had a look at our form which we successfully used for our son and there is a specific section (4) about their disabilities. In this part we just put the actual diagnosis. We saved the details for later sections which asked about toileting, for example.

In all the later sections we made sure we put lots of detail about how we had to do things for him which we didn't have to do for our other kids. For example toilet training, about having to supervise him very closely, about his not having a sense of direction so he couldn't go anywhere on his own etc. It's about the extra impact it's having on you as a parent. We also put lots of detail about how we'd had to reduce our working hours so someone is on hand when he's at school, as they expect us to be able to get there in about 10 minutes.

I'd see if you can find someone to go through it with you though, like the others suggested above. We were fortunate that we had a good friend who had some experience in this and helped us, and wrote our supporting statement.

    Hope this helps a bit!
