Emigrating

Hello everyone.

I have a very specific query regarding emigrating with an ASD child and I would really appreciate any positive feedback if anyone has been in a similar position. I have been trawling the net for information. So far I have been unable to find the information I need.

This requires some background information from me. However, I wish to make clear that I am not asking for approval or personal opinions about our situation. I have grown weary of the arguments that can develop on social media. I am only asking for answers to my questions and am appreciative if anyone can help us.

I am a single parent to an ASD teen. We live in Britain. My child has had no contact with the other parent for some years, due to this parent being unable to deal with the demands of parenting a special needs child. We no longer know the whereabouts of the other parent.

Due to the demands of my parenting and caring role I had to sacrifice my career and personal life for a good many years. I have been unemployed (ha! what a term. More correctly I have been in unpaid employment) and single for a long time.

I have found a caring and responsible person to share my life with. This person lives in the USA. They have a good job, with a very decent salary. They are able to sponsor me and my child for our visa application. They are able to financially support us for the rest of our lives.

As part of the visa application my child and I have to unerdgo a medical. I am aware my child's condition may raise concerns for the immigration authorities in regards to the prospective burden we may place on society. To clarify - my child is high-functioning, is on no meds, has no behavioural difficulties, attends a mainstream school, has no extra therapies. It is predicted that my child will live independently as an adult.

I understand the Leave of Jurisdiction procedure to emigrate with my child, so my query is not about that.

My specific questions are - Are we required to disclose my child's condition?

What evidence should we prepare for our application?

Does anyone know the realistic timescale for these                                              processes?

In addition, if anyone has experiences of the US education system regarding SEN, I would be grateful.

Many thanks

Otilie
