Autism in mainstream school

Hi there!

I was wondering if anyone can help me. We are currently living abroad in the Middle East. We are looking to go back to the UK with our high functioning autistic seven year old boy. Currently he has a full time shadow teacher and is attending a mainstream primary school.

What is the process I will have to go through when going back to the UK? Also, can anyone tell me how long will it be until he can go back to school as I don't want him to be at home for too long as its important for him not to miss classes and get him back to social interactions? Do you know how long the process will take?

Many thanks,

Debs

I would personally advise you to contact the local authority that covers the area you will be moving back to, they should be able to provide you with more information.

  • My son is nearly 4 now and I am awaiting a diagnosis for him. I did think he was a little behind when he wasn't talking at 3 but family members kept saying oh he will catch up there's nothing to worry about. He also constantly grinds his teeth and spins in circles and flaps his arm's. Anyway I decided to phone the health visitor who filled some questions out this was a week before he started nursery. My son pulls my hand to and takes me to what he wants as he doesn't talk he makes noises and I have no luck potty training him because he doesn't seem to understand a word I say to him. When I took him to nursery he was only there an hour an they phoned me an said we need to speak to you. When I went in my son was completely inconsolable an the teacher said this is not the environment for him he is getting to distressed and doesn't understand what we are saying to him. I am looking for a special school for him but still awaiting a diagnosis the nursery did finally agree to let him go for an hour a day but he just plays in the sand till I pick him up. I have regular meetings with the health visitor and the nursery who say my son sounds as he may have autism but they can't diagnose him so I am waiting on a diagnosis. I am interested if any one has a child who has the same characteristics as my son and what they were diagnosed with. Thanks.
