Behavioural therapy

Hi all. I'm a mum to a 3 year old boy with high functioning autism. We have behavioural challenges with him and need help. The paediatrician recommended ABA therapy. Has anyone here got experience of this therapy and would you give me your opinions on it please? Many thanks

  • Hi Margaret,

Thanks so much for taking the time to tell me what you think.  My son has amazing speech for his age and we have started using social stories too. I wouldn't want him distressed or to change his personality with any form of therapy, we adore him

  • Hi,

I would steer clear of ABA therapy if you can.  I am autistic (high functioning) and my behaviours define a part of my personality.  It is the way I communicate.  I didn't speak before I was four, but managed to tell my parents I hated fluff on my coat, through tantrums I know which were difficult.  Fluff is appearing on coats again this year, but I can easily say that I want a new coat for Christmas without fluffy bits on it.

Do your own research about Lovaas, who thought up ABA.  Google, or other search, what is wrong with ABA therapy as well as its good points.  I do have feelings, and I feel that it is totally wrong.  I would have hated having ABA therapy, it was bad enough having to attend school, with rules that I didn't understand.

If you need help, try to understand what your child is trying to communicate to you.  If you are going out and their behaviour is poor, look at introducing social stories into your lives, to explain what is going to happen and how your child can cope.

    Good luck with your research,

    Margaret
