  • Hello Kir,

You could use the info on this sight to explain to your Son what Autisim means for him.

Back in the day I used simple pictures & drawings to explain Autism to some one in your Sons situation but in their forties.

Simple words & pictures go along way if he is a visual learner.

Explain how his Autisim affects him.  That he is still able to learn but it may take him longer,to understand certain things.

Explain to him Autisim isn't an illness just a different way of seeing & understanding what's around us.

Highlight his strengths aswell.  Even if they are small.

    Hope this helps

  • My son was diagnosed at barely 15 with Aspergers and would get very angry any time I'd bring it up. He also went very deep into defense mode and stayed there until a couple of weeks ago. He's 16 now. I had lunch with him today and we spoke openly about it. I think he just needed time to absorb it and realize that there was no negativity to his diagnosis, just understanding he is wired differently than most people. My advice would be to just keep the communication open and honest with him. Know and accept that his feelings are real to him.
