NAS schools & local Autism services

Hi Everyone

This is the first time I've posted here. Currently looking for a new placement for my 16 year old whose current special school can no longer meet her needs. Am I the only Parent who finds that their child has the 'wrong type' of Autism for NAS schools or indeed specialist services generally? The general response I seem to receive from autism 'specialist' services is that my daughter won't fit with the 'current' group, which means she will never access any NAS services as her Autism prevents as too challenging. I find it soo frustrating that I have a local NAS school but can't use it.

  • Hi

That is tricky to describe properly without going into great detail about exactly how my daughter's Autism presents. (although the forum is annonymous I don't really want to give too much personal information)

My adult son has HFA (Aspergers) and needed TA support all through mainstream school because of his challenging behaviour, rather than behaviour that challenges. His impaired social understanding ect meant he did not respect authority and would 'storm off' when things were no going his way for example. My daughter in contrast is very instinct driven and she lacks the language & comprehension to explain her self injurious behaviours or random acts of aggression. She has never been in mainstream (10yrs academically behind mainstream peers, understanding level of a toddler) and behaviour management plans do not prevent her behaviours as they sometimes appear to have no triggers.

    Hope this explanation is helpful
