Autism and Periods

I was wondering if any of you had any practical advice for me. I have 3 children who have autism and my oldest girl has just started her period this evening. We were so well prepared and have had lots of chats with her but the practical side hasn't gone so well. She has been crying all evening (and me) the towels we are using make her feel itchy and uncomfortable. Are there ay period knickers out there or larger size nappies she could wear?  What does everyone else use for their daughers who won't wear a standard sanitary towel?  

I really appreciate any advice, I can only seem to find items overseasa after using Dr Google!

    My daughter found the bodyform with wings the most secure and comfortable. The heart picture on the pad was also a very useful aid to putting it in her pants the right way around. As my daughter is at the lower functioning end of the spectrum (& had only been out of night time nappies for a year when she first started) I wanted to make sure that she didn't start soiling herself again so avoided anything 'nappy like'. I found the book, 'taking care of myself' by Mary Wrobel ISBN 1-885477-94-5 invaluable for teaching my daughter about using pads, period pains ect. Hope this helps, good luck!

  • The towels can be uncomfortable. Have you tried the smaller ones aimed at teens or not everyone's choice but there are lots of reusable washable cloth ones available. You just soak in alidded  bucket like cloth nappies then throw in the washer. They come in soft fabrics and fun colours. You can buy them on eBay, some independent health shops sell them. Check out the Go real website.
