Potty Training

Hi, my son has ASD and will be 4 in a few months. I have tried a few different methods of trying to sit him on the potty/toilet but he becomes very anxious and refuses to go near it. He has sat and done a wee on the toilet at nursery but is reluctant to do it at home. I was wondering if anyone had any tips? TIA x

  • Hi Epeck,

I had this with my Son for six years.

He used to soil himself anywhere then smear it.  so every time he went in the wrong place indoors.

I would clean the mess then take him to the toilet & leave him for a short period of time.

I wrote down when he would eat & when he drank.  Roughly when I thought he wanted to go toilet took him then when he went in the toilet I would praise him.

Perhaps ask what is working at the school.  For me the school were helpful in taking him to the toilet then giving praise when appropriate.

Six years later he went himself.  One day.  such a relief.

Didn't make to much fuss when he went in the wrong place outside the home.

As he would like the attention.  You could try getting a stall & toilet seat for him.

Perhaps he may not like the potty.

Try to break down the toilet trainning into stages, to find out what is causing the anxiety.

Let us know how it goes
