  • It is generally accepted that autism is lifelong and there is no cure, so the alternative is for family members to reconsider their attitudes - understand that she has autism and is great/learn that autism isn't shameful. I'm not saying it is easy for people to address their strongly held beliefs, but autism won't disappear and autism is not a separate part of an autistic person. Perhaps for the mother and brother some counselling, learning ways to deal constructively with other people's negativity or gaining more understanding about their family member's autism would help. The brothers must have somehow learned to feel shameful, so perhaps they could be supported to unlearn their shame.
