Further Education Problems

I am posting to see if anyone can offer some guidance for my son. He is 19 with Aspergers and suffers from panic attacks and anxiety. He did not do well enough at A level to get directly on to the University course that he wants. He should be comfortable at University as his chosen course is in the same city where another of my sons already lives, giving him a level of familiar support. He has spent the last year at home and gets fractious because he doesn't go out at all. He wants to get a HNC qualification to allow him to start his chosen degree. The only college that offers this course over one year (he does not want to spend two years doing a foundation course) is 45 miles away, and will cost £6000 for the tuition alone. The distance to travel and the financial burden are making him more anxious. I have no way of funding the course myself. I am self-employed and scrape by with a little help from WTC. I can not seem to find any alternative for him, ie learning at distance, local evening classes etc, so this 90 mile round trip, three times a week appears to be the only option. He has left it very late to apply this year, like last year, where he kept putting it off and in the end missed the deadline. This adds to his anxiety which seems to put him in a depressive loop. I would be very grateful to anyone that could point me to websites (outside of the UK.Gov ones I have already visited) that may be of help, or to anyone that may have been through this challenge and can give me some first hand advice. Thanks in advance. George I

  • He raised the age 21 subject as a possible age limitation for a 'student' loan as opposed to a regular loan. ie Student loan re-payable once a level of income has been reached, vs normal loan payable immediately. I thought it was 24 but will be checking through the gov.uk finance pages. May also qualify for DSA. As for study, he wants to study at least at level 4, ie HNC. His choice, although I have suggested BTEC level 3, they won't necessarily gain him enough UCAS points to get on the course he wants. If he can gain a distinction at HNC he can go straight in to year two of a degree course. He doesn't want to lose another year. Thanks again. I will post further updates

  • HNC is Higher National Certificate which is Level 4. He does not want to go back to re-sitting A-Levels. I have tried that tack. He sees it as retrogressive in his learning curve. We have talked tonight about his options. I have suggested taking the two year course in more familiar (and nearer) surroundings, but this will put him over 21 and could limit his funding options. Thanks for your reply and concern. George I
