Trouble with my pre-teen HELP!!

Hello, I have never reached out to anyone in regards to not knowing what to do.. My 11 year old son has been diagnosed with high functioning autism and ADHD.. We have always struggled with school and social activities, but over-all the melt downs had seemed to stop for a long while!! Recently, my son has become very emotional.. I can't figure out a specific trigger and nothing in our routine has changed, other than school is fixing to start.. When I ask him what he is upset about he tells me that he has a hard time explaining what he is thinking, and he will get tongue-tied when trying to talk about things.. Where I live we don't have much as far as therapy goes.. To many, including family members that we don't see often, he seems like a perfectly normal kiddo! (While of course he is perfect in my eyes) I hear all too often that ASD is out of the question.. This makes it hard for me to look to anyone for support.. Is anyone else going through this?? Any suggestions at all?!

  • Hi,

I too have an 11 year old son.  When he turned 11, the issues that he had had suddenly escalated and he too became more emotional..it was in desperation that I rang the Autism Society to ask what was happenening to my child, and they told me that it was perfectly normal as it was the onset of puberty, and that this sudden change was not uncommon at 11 years!  We had our suspicions that it might be this, as he was showing physical signs, but nothing prepared us for it.

How are you and your son doing now?
