School Choices

My son is 4 years old and will be going to Mainstream/Special school this September. We have already filled in our choices of mainstream schools in the Primary school application form given by council. Now, we realise that a special school may be a better choice for us. The question is, is it possible for us to request a change in our choices or is it too late. We do not have a SEN with us but it is still in Process.

  • Hi,

I would honestly call your Local Authority and speak to someone.

(I work as a one to one support for children on the spectrum in a mainstream infant/nursery school).

I've also put a link here that may help you..

    www.direct.gov.uk/.../DG_4000870

In the Statement the LA will tell you what Type of school they believe your child should attend. Obviously you have doubts and because you don't have the Statement yet, you do not know what the LA "thinks" is best for your child either based on the information they have. I am assuming your child has been diagnosed?

I would also suggest if you really feel that your child would be best in a special school that you call them and arrange a visit as soon as possible. You really need to see the place and speak to the teachers and staff before the end of this school year and prefereably while school is in session so you have a real idea of what it will be like... It will greatly assist in your ultimate decision of where is best for your child.

again, i really suggest you speak to someone at the LA and explain to them that you have already filled in your choices but are now doubting the suitability of them based on the information you now know about your child...

    hope that helps..
