Son just diagnosed age 13, struggling in mainstream school

Hi, my adoptive son has been with me for nearly six years, it's been an uphill climb to get this far but just diagnosed with autism. He has been struggling at mainstream school socially for some time and often a victim it would seem.

We live in Derbyshire but I've been in touch with and visited a Derby City school specialising in autism etc pupils. Love the school and so does my son and they have a place for him in September if we want it. Only problem is he needs an EHCP but they will take him on an assessment two term placement while it is sorted but I can't be sure he will get EHCP can I?? If he doesn't get EHCP, he will have to move again.

Any advice greatly received,  thank you.

  • Hi! Have you heard of Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) ? It's really quite an affective behavioural learning technique which has great application to schooling with children/young teenagers with autism. It's been around in America for years but for whatever reason the UK seem to have been slow in recognising. If you would like I could send you more information if you'd finf it helpful? :)
