Don't know what to do- 4 exclusions in 4 weeks

my son is six, year 1. He is not coping with school. He has now been put on a part time timetable, mornings only. We have to collect him and find child care for him in the afternoon (and his childminder's patience seems to have worn out).

He has been excluded on the second day of the school week every week this term. Which has meant either my husband or me taking unpaid leave to care for him as the childminder will not have him if he is excluded.

He hits his teaching assistant. He claims he does not even remember what happens.

we are looking at specialist provisions, but he cannot move until his ehc is sorted out.

we are lost. We do not know what to do to help.

Someone tell me it can get better...

Some schools are too noisy/chaotic/undisciplined for a child with autism to cope with. If he is well behaved and settled at home then a different mainstream school may actually suit him just fine. It is a common theme that kids can be fine at home and out of control at school (or vice versa) and that tells me that it may be the school (or the parent!) that is incompatible with an autistic child.

  • we are expecting the meeting on Tuesday to be permenant exclusion. I suspect that is for the best. i just wish we could get his EHCP sorted so he can access a specialist placement.

He is happily working away at his school work at home.

  • Sounds like a similar situation to us, in that our soon to be 6 year old has not managed starting school at all.  He is also very aggressive and quick to hit.  Fortunately the school is very understanding and have introduced a whole bunch of strategies to try and support him.  He has recently taken to picking up chairs to try and throw at teacher if stressed and not able to control situations.  I know how you must be feeling :( is the school helpful?  I'm sorry I don't have a whole lot of advice, but just well done and I do believe it will get better - that's what others tell me anyway.
