HELP! Toe nail cutting!

Hi all, 

i have a 4 year old who has severe autism with severe learning difficulties. He has a lot of sensory issues but one of the main issues is toe nail Cutting. He is so sensitive to his feet we are not allowed to even look at them without him getting the hump and he has to have socks on all the time and walks on tiptoes. At the moment I am having to sneak into his bedroom and attempt to do it while he's asleep however sometimes he does wake up and then is in such a state it takes forever to get him back to sleep. He is also completely non verbal and doesn't understand anything.. If anyone has got any ideas on what to try would be much appreicated. May I add that as soon as we get scissors he goes mad and if we go anywhere near him.

    Unfortunately I have no wonderful ideas but I do know what your going through. My daughter is 3 and has similar problems. She likes to be barefoot and any suggestion of cutting nails, fingers or toes, is a huge nightmare. We have to cut them when she is asleep. This can often take several nights as we tend to do one or two at a time so as not to wake her. This seems to work for her.

    Her finger nails are the most important for us to avoid being scratched etc during her meltdowns. Just today she had a small hangnail from her big toe which she freaked at, but wouldn't let us cut or touch it but got herself in such a state. We eventually managed to trim it with my wife cuddling her tight and me sneaking round the back to cut it.

    We use nail clippers rather than scissors which seems to work better for us.
