5 year old with "aspergers traits"

Hi

My daughter is 5 1/2 and has been assessed as having aspergers traits.

I am quite despairing at the moment as when I try and talk to her its like I am talking to a brick wall with no response just a blank look, although she insists she can hear me.

She is happy to talk when she is playing with her younger sister most of the time but rarely offers information about her day etc and the pace of her speech sounds a bit slow.  On the odd occasion that she does speak it takes her a while to get the words out, although it usually makes sense. When she was younger she was pretty silent at home until she was 4 although she had the ability to speak.

Her teachers say she is quiet at school but dont think there is anything to worry about, I realise she is in no way as bad as some children's speech.   I guess I am wondering if it is worth her seeing a speech therapist to assess if there is a problem or if anyone has come across this kind of behaviour and can offer any wisdom.

With thanks

  • Thanks so much for your reply, I think you are right she isn't interested in what I am asking and doesn't see the point of conversation.  I have just had a few of her classmates over to play and started to realise how different their communication is (and have enjoyed their conversations!!).  I suppose the comparison doesn't help her and I shouldnt expect her to be the same as them even if she does just have traits.

She will talk through playing frozen so I imagine that's the way to connect with her rather than general conversation.

    Thanks again
