Changing from Mainstream to special needs school advice.

Hi. I'm looking for some advice. I'm a mum to 3 Children on the Spectrum. All full time statements. All attending mainstream school. My oldest Child is soon to be 9, he has seriously struggled with the work  for about six months. There have been strategies it into place, but nothing has worked. He is so unhappy, he is getting frustrated and anxious at school as he is finding the workload too hard. Mainstream school is just too much for him now. He is getting angry all the time, at school, refusing to participate, throwing things in the classroom. He is the most sweet, normally happy boy. It's just too upsetting seeing him struggle like this. I'm worried that it's making him regress!  Im adamant that this isn't the setting for him now, and was looking for advice, and information on the process of moving schools. Thank you.

  • I am a father of 2 children! You need to decide what is not the same for your children and, based on this, choose a school for them: someone likes drawing with step-by-step manuals, someone likes music, someone likes dancing! Chat with your kids or take tests with them on inclinations and choose a good school!

  • Hi, may I suggest arranging a meeting with all the professionals involved with your son. Together you can discuss his current needs, challenges and strengths. Then come up with a plan that would suit him. Speak to your son also, ask what he would like, what he finds difficult and what he would like changed  to make things easier for him. If he's having good days and bad days, I would suggest attempting to ascertain what happens or doesn't happen to make a day either good or bad. Work with the school on this also. This is where you can really get your son involved, making sure his voice is heard. I hope some of this helps.

  • Hey there Linz, former special needs schooled Autistic here myself, I'd ask on how deep of end is your son for the spectrum, eg, some of us high functionals' can handle mainstream, given enough support like a special needs assistant in class, helps keeps us focused and all that. Whereas someone on the lower to mid might find it far better to seek a new placement. I'd suggest seeing whether the council/school can implement any of the above before attempting to a change of schooling, though considering how close he is to moving up to high school, it's a pickle of a situation. No easy answer for sure.

Personally, I went through five different schools myself, two mainstream, three special needs units attached on to mainstreams, I had been held back a year prior to changing schools, so that gave me a little bit of an edge and a cushion to sudden changes from the schools and whatnot. No easy decisions here, that's for sure.

  • Hi i would suggest contacting your local council and person allocationg your child current shool placement. My son just started secondary school and really struggling. After 2 months school already suggested moving my son to different school. I contacted my council and informed them. Currently im awaiting for meeting at school and after that i will be contacting council again (as requested by Council) they said they will guide me trough all possible options.

    Please keep me posted

  • Hello.

i don't know if I can offer any advice, but I am in a similar position. My five year old has ASC and possibly ADHD and is in mainstream and has always struggled. He is very resistant to the work and his behaviour can be awful at school, very physical. He has only attended nine hours a week since Christmas. But some days, he gets on well and comes out saying he had a great day. He has several friends there that he loves. The school cannot meet his needs unfortunately despite all the support they have put in place including full time one to one. He is very bright, but very complex and we are now looking at special schools.

My son is currently being assessed for an EHCP. We are looking around special schools over the next few weeks and when he is issued with a draft plan, we are planning on naming a special school.

if your son is statemented, can you ask for a review and name a different school on his statement? Has he been tranferred to an EHCP Yet?
