Dealing with high anxiety in 6yr old

Hello,

My daughter is almost 6 (friday infact!) and is awaiting assessment for possible Aspergers or ADHD....She has lots of symptoms of both, so not sure how that works!?

Currently our biggest problem is her massive anxiety levels, she gets so stressed out about lots of things, which really dont know how to tackle it! her current obsession is about getting locked in places!? she is terrified of lifts, automatic doors, just shutting a door to a room which has a lock on it gets her panicking! she has huge seperation issues with me too....

She has awful trouble getting to sleep at night, which is making things worse as she is overtired and so uncooperative and highly strung the next day!

Any suggestions on how we can help her??

  • I would add that it is important not to force your daughter into situations that make her anxious because based on my own experience, this can aggravate the problem. The worst thing is to reprimand her or make her feel silly - my own parents have done this on occasion, usually when under stress and when they are at their wits end with my issues, but it does more harm than good. If you are anxious, you cannot help it - it is caused by a neuro-chemical imbalance and can only be tackled in a professional way, by experts, who can then give you expert advice.
