Temporary removal from school

Hi, can anyone out there help me out?

My little boy is 9, he's currently in mainstream primary but his mental and physical health are deteriorating rapidly. He had a diagnosis of ASD for the past 2 years and up until 6 months ago was dealing with life as well as could be expected but he has gone down hill so much he is being assessed for a education health care plan.

School used to be able to contain him but that is no longer the case and they have found the strategies they had no longer work on him. He is highly stressed, is showing signs of sensory overload, he's stimming like there is no tomorrow. The stress has got so high he has started to self harm, not sleep, rock and moan in class.

I spoke to CAMHS and they suggested a part time timetable but school have refused this, saying they didn't feel it was in his best interests. SO would we have the right to take him out of school for a couple of weeks to reboot? Can a gp sign him off with stress? Can school fine us if they class it as unauthorised?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this

  • Hi, my son is also aged 9 and has also had the same problems at school that you are describing....... He's had both internal and external exclusions to which i feel could have been avoided. His mental health is also at critical point and is really stuggling to cope with school life.

I'm pretty new to everything but with our troubles we got in touch with 'parent partnership' who have been a great help in advising us of the "ins and outs" of what we can do, what school can do etc. They will be able to advise you better.....

My son has been put in the position of extreme distress at school on occasion and we have decided to keep him at home to try and "re-boot" and it has helped in the past. We haven't done it on a regular basis and only ever used it as a last resort but we felt it would do more harm than good to put him through that again on those occasions.

If you do decide to take him out of school for a while they may fine you but you can appeal the decision.

I hope everything works out for you
