Explaining Autism to children

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and I am looking for some support.

My son was recently diagnosed with Autism and ADHD. He has always had difficulties in terms of seocial interaction and understanding and gets very frustrated with himself when he doesnt understand or explain things to people. There have been instances in the past where because of this he has become aggressive.

Recently things at school have become very difficult and because of his aggression he is now not allowed in the classroom. I have thought about taking him out of school and looking for new schools to send him to as I feel the school just sees him as a naughty boy and doesnt discipline the other children involved who extremely bully my son which then causes him to become angry and frustrated. It is heartbreaking as a mother as I know that he really doesnt understand why these children don't like him and are nasty to him.

I have been contemplating whether I should tell him about his diagnosis and if I do tell him what are the best ways to explain it to him in a way he understands. Would him knowing the reasons he has such difficulties help him?

Any help or advice on this would be really helpful.

Thank you,

MummyBee
