Son aged 13 starting to slap himself when distressed

My son has Aspergers and what complicates matters is that so do I. I am really struggling  after this weekend where he had a meltdown when I told him off for something. Told him off in what I thought was a firm but kind way. He then starts crying uncontrollably and starts hitting himself in the face. I could not console him. This is not the first time he has done this sort of behaviour, but this was after such a small challenge to him.

I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do.

  • My son with Aspergers does this too, for example if struggling with a maths problme, or indeed, having been told off by me for something. He is 13.

I am not toooooo alarmed as he is unlikely to hurt himself badly - though he does hit himself quite hard - but I do tell him firmly to "stop it, no!", which tends to work for us.

    Good luck :)
