8yr old girl with changing behaviour

Hi, hoping someone can give me some guidance.  I have an 8 yr old daughter who was diagnosed with ADHD at 5 & then ASD about 18 months later. She is developmentally delayed both mentally & physically. She takes meds for her ADHD & risperadone for her anxiety.

her behaviour has been changing over the last few months, she doesn't want to go out anymore (not that she did a lot before).  Her anxiety is clearly worse, wants to know what every noise is. She keeps crying, the kind of sobbing that takes over your whole body.  (there was an unexpected death in the family 18mnths ago, I think she is still grieving). She gets things confused, has told me my other daughter is eating oatcakes when it was crisps, that word mix up thing has happened a lot but my brain is blank as I try to think of an example.  She counts a lot, just over and over saying numbers, has her made up words that she uses, Braminola.

I'm not sure if this is just developing behaviour as she gets older & things change around her, like coping strategies or if there's something wrong and I should be telling the psychiatrist.  I feel like I'm right back at the beginning & I don't understand her.  When she was diagnosed I chose to get educated, attend the various workshops offered so I could support her,  but I'm lost again.

Has the psychiatrist (or even her GP) seen her behaving the way that she is behaving now? If there has been a significant change of behaviour then I think it makes sense to consult a doctor.

  • Thanks for the reply. I was hoping to get her off the risperadone but our psychiatrist wants to wait until G is using other ways of calming down. I need to teach her how to cope but first I just learn about it. Just waiting for a course to be run.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post & Reply.

Kids do make up words and I suspect that her counting behaviour may fall under the repetitive behaviour that is associated with ASD. People with ASD do behave differently to other people but that may just be the way she is.

Risperidone is apparently recommended for children with autism but it comes with a bunch of warnings of potential side effects such as "impaired thinking". www.drugs.com/risperidone.html

I would review the side efffects of all of the meds that she is on and then go and talk to her GP.
