Finding the right school

Hi, my 6 year old son is moving to Junior school next September, and we are facing the task of having to find the right school. It seems easy to find specialist schools, but we would really like to find a mainstream school with a unit, or perhaps a satellite school. It seems really hard to find these - does anybody have some hints they can share?  Or if in the midlands, any school that would tick the box for a bright boy, high-functioning ASD who needs some help managing his anxieties etc at school??

Parents
  • Is there an autism parents' group or a branch of NAS in your area? They might be well placed to advise you, or if there is one near you, go along to their meetings/social events, and find out from other parents what options are availble and which work best.

In theory you can find these groups using the little pink and red maps of Britain on the home and community pages of this website. The search function is London-centric - ie even if you ask for Lands End or Robin Hood's Bay the first ten options will be in London. Just scroll down until you find something useful.

Even if there isn't a group near you, the nearest such as next county, may be able to give you the information you need.
