Education Issues

Does anyone feel let down by the education system? Where you're a parent or someone with Autism, I feel that there should be major changes to 'personalise' a students education system according to the EHCP or statement they have in place, whether it's personal, social or education development assistance they require.

I have experienced both good and bad sides of mainstream education within SEN Departments.

Who would we talk to about this?

  • I share your feelings exactly.  My son currently attends a mainstream school where the teachers and support staff are severely overstretched.  There's a general lack of understanding or even willingness to learn about my sons needs.  I recently attended a school trip with his class and the experience nearly reduced me to tears never mind the impact it has on my son.  My feelings are that if a child doesn't fit into a neurotypical box they still tend to be ostracised for the difficulties.

With regards to who to contact, I am at a loss.  I have complained to my education board who did not even take the time to respond. I am attending an MDT meeting with key people involved in my sons care on Monday and can only hope that things improve.  I am currently considering either volunteering in my sons school or home schooling - which of course will do him no favours socially. Its just so difficult to see mistakes being made and being powerless to prevent them.
