typing rather than writing

Hi everyone, i was wondering if anyone could offer some advice? My daughter (ASD diagnosed) has just started year 5 at her mainstream primary school. She has always complained about handwriting, she hates it. However, she can write legibly and has aquired the skill rather well. she complains that her hand hurts and it more often than not causes her to become really anxious then upset and angry. Therefore alot of the time the majority of the task remains unfinished. Yesterday at school she became so upset at having to write that she had a major melt down hitting out at children and teachers. I wanted to know if anyone had this issue with their child? Would it be acceptable for her to type out her work as she is a fantastic typer she would complete the work in half the time and be alot more engaged in the topic.

thank you in advance

Emma.

  • It may be that she is concentrating so much on making her handwriting as perfect as she can make it, that she is both writing slowly and holding her pen so tightly that she is cramping her hand. As a diagnosed autistic, I feel that allowing her to use a computer and to type in class is a reasonable accommodation by the school. After all, in today's world keyboard skills are much more relevant than writing. It aught to free up her mind from concentrating on an essentially outdated skill to concentrate on the actual schoolwork.
