Continuing Education

Hello,

We are parent carers of an 18 year old who will be leaving school in July 2016.

We want to maintain some sort of education provision, but FE colleges, residential colleges, university, art schools etc are not an option currently.

Is there anyone out there who has put in place a system of 121 home tutors centred around their young person's interests/strengths eg Art, Design, Games Design? Public Speaking, Creative writing, Fashion design?

If you have put such a 121 plan in place or have ideas as to how to go about it I would be grateful.

  • Sector Skills Councils Looks of interest. Thank you!

  • I cannot comment directly on the home tutoring aspect but given the list did not mention distance learning, felt I should at least raise this.

The well known distance learning provider is Open University, which has lots of courses down to basic starters. They do have tutors a student is supposed to be in contact with, and tutorial sessions but there must be ways around this.

However many universities and colleges offer distance learning packages including lower level than degree packages. Some of these might be work experienced based but there are ways around that.

The thing is you can get courses and modules which offer CATS points, which count towards other qualifications. So you can build up gradually by pick and mix, and get in a home tutor to help with completion.

One way to look into this is via Sector Skills Councils. The Goverrnment has lately altered this a lot, but a bit of searching around on the web will get you into a site which lists all the Sector Skills Councils and gives their contact details, These bodies provide guidance on training in their sectors, eg media, construction, health, leisure, facilities management etc. Via these organisations you could find out where to look for distance learning packages.
