Encourage traits or not

Hello our seven year old daughter has asd and SPD. It's been three years since she was diagnosed and I'm trying really hard to understand it all. Our daughters traits change daily but she has begun slapping herself and I told her not to do that and she went all sad like I had told her off but if she is doing it for a relief of some kind I feel I am stopping her from being her.

I always try to just let her be herself but I can't get my head round her hurting herself, should we just leave her do it, is there some way of redirecting her?

Thank you in advance xx

  • Go to "About Autism" on the home page of the NAS website (towards top left); from that choose "understanding behaviour", then choose "challenging behaviour", and finally "self-injurious behaviour".

There are about four pages, some content a bit alarming, but bear in mind this is a mild form, self hitting.

But these web pages and any links, should help.
