Encourage traits or not

Hello our seven year old daughter has asd and SPD. It's been three years since she was diagnosed and I'm trying really hard to understand it all. Our daughters traits change daily but she has begun slapping herself and I told her not to do that and she went all sad like I had told her off but if she is doing it for a relief of some kind I feel I am stopping her from being her.

I always try to just let her be herself but I can't get my head round her hurting herself, should we just leave her do it, is there some way of redirecting her?

Thank you in advance xx

  • It might be a need to better understand sensation, or some form of stimming. But this is complicated territory, and you probably need specialist advice.

Children who are hyposensitive, less sensitive to pain, may need a more positive action to stimulate comprehension.

Some children have a need to handle, grip or squeeze objects for similar reasons.

Hopefully someone will come in on this who knows more about it..... but it is a very specific area to maybe just a few parents.
