Appealing for secondary school place based on Aspergers/ADHD, advice needed

I can't even begin to comprehend how my 11yr old son is going to cope with the sudden changes that are about to happen

• move house (the only one he has known)

• move out of the area (over 40miles away)

• start secondary school for the first time  (he hasn't been to ever)

• lose close contact with friends (we don't know a soul where we are going)

He has been diagnosed with Aspergers & ADHD.

We are moving closer to my husbands place of work and have managed to find a house within walking distance (14min) of the local secondary school. We applied and were refused a place because it's full. My son has been offered a place 7 miles away and is expected to use a bus to get there! I am about to start the very daunting appeal process, basically I need to prove why it would benefit my son to attend the school I want him to go to over the one he has been given a place at.

i would love to hear from anyone else who has been in a similar situation and would be grateful of any advice, especially how I can get my opinion across that my son wouldn't cope with a school bus situation and I feel he should go to school within walking distance so that I can walk him safely there, maybe one day he can walk there himself! also I feel it would be an advantage to go to school with others that live locally, it's hard enough to make friends. I need to base this on medical grounds. I am awaiting a letter of support from his consultant but I'm not sure it will point out how one school will favour his health over another, (especially the distance factor) we will see when/if it arrives.

  • hi, I went through a difficult time getting my daughter into the school we wanted. The school they offered was not an appropriate placement atall and like you we were worried sick. In the end we went to appeal. This involved visisting the school they had offered and finding all the reasons we felt it was not appropriate. We put together every document we had and made appointments to see every specialist we could to back up our argument that the school offered was not the right place for her. We then wrote our own statement listing all the reasons we thought the disision was wrong. We then went to tribunal and won the appeal. You already have some great points to argue, such as safe travel to school, the practicalities of getting him to school if you have to travel with him. You will be suprised when you put pen to paper how many reasons you can find. There are also educational support groups that can give you advice. Arm yourself with as much information as you can. In our daughters situation we started as novices and at the end of the tribunal one of the education board told us they had felt embarresed trying to argue against our points. I hope this helps some what. Good luck
