Aspergers medication advice

My son is 27 years old and has been diagnosed with Aspergers Dyspraxia and other Learning Disabilities. He has been prescribed Zyprexa by his Psychiatrist which we give him occasionally to calm him and to help him sleep at night. His meltdown episodes seem to be getting more frequent and his daily moods are like turning a light switch on and off. Also his obsessional thoughts are stronger and he thinks and talks about them constantly.

His Psychiatrist has offered to give him a more regular medication to see if this will help.

We've always been anti-medication as we don't want him in a sedated condition continually. And so we are seeking advice on what medication are 'kind', safe and will not have serious side effects (short and long term).

Any advice/information would be much appreciated.

  • My son had no problems swallowing the tablets at all.  Once he came off the medication he went back to the behaviour  he had before with loads of meltdowns and every little thing winding him up.  It was incredibly stressful for him and for us but we were not allowed to give him the tablets without him knowing so we could function as a family.  I had other children who were not taken into account by the doctors and it ended up with my son putting himself in to care which was a temporary solution.  He has now gone to university which has created a whole new set of problems but we are not involved as he is technically an adult and he has pushed us away.

  • Does he have any problems swallowing the Prozac or is he OK with tablets? 

  • Thanks for your reply and sharing your experience. Our other problem will be that if we decide to go for regular medication will be getting Paul to take it. At the moment when Paul is in meltdown mode he will drink anything you give him (Zyprexa is a dispersible tablet) I feel sure he wouldn't take regular medication because he doesn't acknowledge his behaviour is unreasonable. Can I ask how old was your son when he first started taking prozac and were there side affects ? and how do you cope now he has decided not to.

    When my son was younger he had terrible meltdowns and was very disruptive.  He was given risperodon which did not really do a great deal.  The one thing that did work was prozac.  It not "space" him out but just took the edge off his anxieties so that every little thing did not become a major issue.  Unfortunately when he was 17 he decided that he did not want to take medication anymore and stopped taking it.  The difference was amazing, he was very stressed we were back to every little thing being a major trauma.
