Private Autism School

Hi,

I recently posted about confusion regarding which type of school is right or my son. He has Aspergers but as hormones have kicked in, he has become more volatile and I'm seriously concerned about his ability to cope in mainstream, with or without an ARP.

I've not spoken to 2 ARP's, one said they could take him theoretically but they're at capacity, one said ARP's are more for acdemic support than behavioural and that an ARP might not be right for him. They were the fantastic when we visited and suggested that we try and find a Autism school.

As it happens, I worked at a behavioural school and the Head of Education there left to open a Private School for children with Autism. My issues are that he would now need his statement changing again to special school and it is out of county!

A special school that is closer also said they didn't think they could cope with behavioural needs and that they focus more on academics. There is no way I would send him to a behvioural school. Having worked in one, I see so many Autistic fall through the gaps in provision and end up there when all they need is a little understanding of ASC and their behaviour is all but near perfect.

Has anyone got experience of this?

Many thanks

  • Hi, from your posts it sounds like mainstream schooling with/without support has failed your son?  I'm not sure what an ARP is exactly but I think I would be looking for autism-specific schools, whether day or boarding.  I know it's a big step to take + you'll have a battle on your hands with your council but I can't think of anything else to do, apart from home schooling.
