Call from school with concerns

Today we got a call from school with some  concerns about something our son had said at school  apparently he has said that my wife has hit him 

now she is panicking because of this the thing is he does tend hit himself a lot when he is getting stressed

    Has she ever hit him? There is a huge difference between routine everyday smacking or hitting and being hit once in his life. He may, however, remember just one incident and be really confused and angry about it.

    Can you get him to talk to you about it without your wife being there? i.e. don't make it a confrontation between the two of them.
