speech and language therapy

Hi, ive never posted on here before but do read this forum for advice. My son is 8 and high functioning. Among other things he struggles with focusing and his communication is very own agenda.  Weve just moved to Scotland from England and already his school have referred him for speech, language and communication therapy! Which is amazing as in England he had no support whatsoever!

Anyway, the reason im posting is, weve had an appointment through for 2 weeks time and i dont know how or what to tell him about this!  He will want to know where we are going and why, but if i tell him the chances are he will meltdown.

Any advice on what i can say to him? Hes never had any kind of therapy before. Thanks in advance :)

  • Hi, thanks for replying. I dont want to lie to him about it, im extremely open with him, but i dont know how to tell him he needs this therapy without upsetting him as he has confidence issues. I cant seem to find a kind way explaining this to him.

  • Hello

I think  you got to be honest with him and just say it. Otherwise he will learn not to trust you in the long run. Just be plain about it. Don't dress it up or down and take the melt down as matter of cause if indeed he has a meltdown.  He more likely to have a meltdown if he discovers that you have 'lie'd to him' when he finds out exactly and sorts it out in his own mind. Far better to be upfront simple and honest with it. Give him the space to have his meltdown and process it his way if he needs that space
