statementing

Hi. could anyone shed any light for me on statementing my 5 year old ASD son. I know its EHCP now and not statementing but everyone still seems to refer to it in its former lable.

We have chosen  not to statement as he has very good full time 121 support in school. the SENCO has mentioned that even if we had a statement, hes getting all he can so it might be a waste of time which is a fair point.

Having spoken to a friend the other day though shes explained some further benefits of applying.

Can anyone explain what other benefits a statement would have for my son.

Many thanks

  • Hi, I don't know what benefits your friend mentioned but an obvious 1 is that your child should be able to access the support he needs at school, such as a TA etc.  Also as our children get older many find school more difficult, especially if in mainstream secondary.  You need the statement in advance of your child moving up so that support is in place.  Have a look at the posts from other parents.  Also, if you are considering applying for any benefits, then I wd think him having a statement as well as a diagnosis wd help.
