fecal hiding and smearing

Hi All, Does anyone have any experience of this really challenging behaviour? My son is 8.5 years and has done this for years as well as frequently soiling his pants. I have to constantly search the house and disinfect. Physical causes for the soiling have been ruled out. He is still not diagnosed but had an assessment last month and the paediatrician said that his behaviours strongly indicate that he is on the spectrum. She still wants more information from his school. Talking to him about the hiding, smearing and soiling issue has got me nowhere. Still can't find out from him why he does it and normal sanctions have never worked.  Any ideas anyone please, am getting desperate now

  • Hi,

I work with autistic and challenging behaviour teenagers, and I have come across this a couple of times. The smearing of faeces is a sensory need for some children on the spectrum as they get a lot out of it - the feel, the smell etc. You could try doing some other kinds of sensory play with him to see if he can fulfil his sensory needs a different way. Cornflour and water is good for sensory play, but you could use jelly, pasta, rice, and a whole load of other things.

    I hope this helps!
