New to home schooling

Hi,  my son (8) has only just been diagnosed with asperger's.  We decided to home school him before we found this diagnosis out and have just started.  We live in East Ayrshire and I was wondering if there was anyone else out there in East Ayrshire who would be interested in meeting up? Or if there is any advice folks could give me on home schooling an autistic child.  Thanks!

  • Hi cupcake,

Dont worry about how often you can get on here to check posts sometimes im on everyday and sometimes not for a cupple of weeks it just depends on how life is going.

It is very much a learning curve but then i think it is with all kids being a mum is tough! Where my son is 16 I will try and let you know how we handled different things see if it helps at all. Probably not coz these kids are all different!! and what worked one week didnt the next! lol!! On the note of what do you discipline for and what you dont, it a personal choice. I decided that I would still disipline my eldest for everything that you would any other child just in a different manner hoping that he would understand eventualy as it takes a lot longer for him to grasp full understanding as it does my other kids although he is educationaly speaking very clever.. We did this because at the end of the day its not an excuse for bad behaviour and the goal I have always had is for him to become as independant as possible. Unfortunatly no one out in the big wide world will make alowances for him so we feel the need to teach him as much as possible. But I know that we are lucky in a way with his other problems that limits his capabilities for getting in trouble lol!! and every child is different which is why I said it has to be a personal choice whats best for you and your family. Especialy where you are with him full time, My son goes to college for only 2 and a half days a week and Im finding that hard to cope with! lol! dont know how you do it!!

With his socialization skills have you thought about any clubs, My boys all go to the Boys Brigade even though we are not religious, I chose the BB's because it is more structured than the scouts , more routined and because I knew other parents of a child with very bad  ADHD that had been through the BB's and it helped him and the leaders were very understanding. Michael was 7 when he started and still goes, he is now working on his Queens Badge and I think the sence of achievment he gets from the BB's is great as they reward effort just as much as they do results.

God just read that back and it reads like a lecture! will be so much easier face to face and then its a two way chat. Anyway hope it helps in some way.

    take care,

    sam
