Home Educating?

Hi,

My son has high functioning Aspergers and also Dyspraxia and learning difficulties.  I have been unable to get him a statement.  He is 15 years of age now and is finding school incredibly difficult.  He has always found school a struggle and has been bullied/teased thoughout.  I have constant meetings with school who tell me that he is "coping" and they he doesnt need to be statemented as his school work is improving.  He gets support from teaching assistants on the back of other kids statements which the school advise is more than he would get if he was statemented.  He is now in Year 10 and he is not coping with the pressure of doing GCSE's.  He hates school and wants to be removed.  His confidence and self esteem are very low.  I dont think he will cope with his GCSE's next year -he is presently getting E/F in most of his subjects.  The SENCO has told me that if he was tested for Dyscalculia he would probably test positive but they dont feel that he has it he just cannot cope in any pressurised situation.  I am trying to decide whether to pull him from school and home educate him until he is ready to go to college.  I wondered if anyone has had any similar experience who has pulled their child and were they able to go on to college? Any advice would be greatly received.

  • I cannot even begin to tell you how much on the same page I feel! I am just not sure if my son could cope with the stress of moving school or if and how I would start home schooling?! He has a small but strong group of friends where he is and that's the only positive he has got from this schoo! We too have a handful of fantastic teachers but some really awful ones and a Senco that would bend over backwards not to help

  • I am in the same boat! My son is 14 and struggles with school, I have such a nightmare getting him there everyday but the Senco thinks the Prob is me actually getting him to go and not the fact that's his struggling as according to her his fine once his there??? His attendance is low and he has an eating disorder due to stress! His recently been diagnosed with Autsim but they are telling me he won't benefit from and Prob would not get an EHCP ?? Really not sure how to start with home schooling or if I could do it??! With GCSE's just around the corner I don't know what to do for the best?!

  • I home Educate my almost 15 year old Aspergers Son, and have done since he was almost 6.

We are just starting to look seriously at GCSE's.

  • Hello there!

I home educate. I have my ASD boy and his two sisters at home. My AS boy is only 13 and we're just starting on the harder stuff leading up to GCSEs. Unfortunately I've only got experence of getting his older, "normal" sister through her GCSEs.

There are many Home Ed support groups on Facebook, and there is at least one SEN one that  know of. If you email me, I'll add you on FB and add you to the groups. :D
