computer for school

hi we hage finally got a statement for my 9 year old son with high functioning autism. Included is the provision of a computer for him to use at school.  School have asked us to advise what to get him and i really don't know where to start. Is a computer or a tablet best. My gut feeling is that a laptop would be best so that as he gets bigger he can bring it to and from school and also because it has a keyboard / disc drive as well.  Any advice gratefully received and also what sort of software should we load onto it as well as microsoft office?  Thanks so much.

    Have you seen? www.autism.org.uk/technology

I would choose something that was not too expensive. £300 can buy a useful machine. A machine with solid state disk will be more robust than a machine with a conventional hard disk.

I can't advise about software for someone that age - perhaps you could call NAS to get advice or someone else may come along with some suggestions on the forum
