school threatening prosecution over son skipping lessons?

Hi I don't know if anyone can help, my son attends an ARC unit, he is diagnosed with autism, adhd, sensory processing disorder, dyslexia, the list goes on and he is statemented.

He is medicated when at school but I don't medicate him at home, I manage to get him up, washed, fed, dressed and into school early everyday without fail.

Because the arc are struggling to get him into lessons they have threatened me with legal prosecution, culminating in a fine and/or prison. I fail to see how I can be responsible for their failing?

A friend who is a teacher said they can't and mentioned in loco parents - instead of a parent.

Any help would be appreciated x

  • Thank you for your help x

I called parent partnership and they think that the school/arc are trying bullying tactics to implement what they want and agree that in loco parentis stands!

  • Hi i think you need to talk to your doctor. I think you son will have off days like we all have, that just are not unstanding take care joseph

  • Hi Justrachel,

I really feel for you.  As far as I can see, you have done what you need to do and can't see how it is your fault.  Have you tried contacting the Autism Helpline in the Education section of the website? They will probably be able to advise and support you.  My Son was completely overwhelmed by a mainstream school setting and had to change to a smaller unit before he began to enjoy education.  Sounds to me that your Son is feeling stressed and panicky about his classes same as my lad was. Feel sure there is an answer and the ARC needs to find it. I hope it works out for you both.
