Teaching The time

Our son really does want to be able to tell the time. He wears a watch, although cant read it.

While he wants to be able to tell the time, he doesnt like the learning process. So, we (for instance) will ask him to let us know when it is 5 o'clock etc, so that he gets into the routine, and doesnt feel like he's being taight, if that makes sense. I did print out blank clock faces and draw various times on and ask him , but I think that might feel too much like school, as he disconnects.

As always - ideas or points of view welcome!!

  • I'd say with teaching any kid anything, its best to avoid making it a chore. My stepfather used to try to teach me maths, and it backfired big time!  Is your son in touch with time generally - eg its getting dark and its winter so nearly tea time.. etc? Maybe you could attach it to some kind of ritual or pleasurable experience eg getting up at dawn to watch the sun come up, or staying up to watch fireworks at midnight? Or take him to a garden centre and let him choose a fancy sundial. Make the 'time' issue incidental.
