Refusing to claim benefits

I am a mum to a 39 year old autistic boy. My son suffers awful social anxiety and hardly leaves the house. He was diagnosed with autism last year. He has been unsuccessful in the workplace and is not working at present. He refuses to claim benefits and so relies on his Mum and Dad looking after him.

Does anyone else have this problem with their adult child?

Many thanks xxx

  • I wonder if part of the reluctance is the fact he knows that work will be forced upon him weather he's able to do it or not?

I do claim benefits my self and despite the fact I have worked before working again scares me because I know that I have limited capability but even if I find a job where I exel thr unknown is for how long.. When does burnout hut and for how long g does it last because for me burn out can be lien a weight dragging me down basic tasks become impossible

  • Thank you for your reply. I totally agree with you. I think is avoidant of any social interaction whether via phone or in person. He doesn’t leave the house. Hasn’t been out for over 12 months. He has had a couple of jobs which all start really well but then his timekeeping and concentration starts to drop off. We’ll keep trying but when I ask him how he sees his future he just says he doesn’t know. Thank you for listening and responding xxxx

  • Thank you for sharing this it's actually madde me feel less alone... Whilst I do have social skills it takes a lot our of me and yes tine keeping bedomes hard after a while in a job and if I'm being honest any ideas of my future always feel like unrealistic dreams
