Does my son have autism and how do I help him. Very confused mum. My son started school in September and he is currently 4. In the first meeting with school they stated he had high functioning autism or believed this to be the case. I now know this is an outdated term as is ASD level 1. Today we had a 2nd meeting with school and they suggested that his current problems this week with a child in his class who he doesnt get on with is nothing to do with Autism and actually would indicate that he is a normal functioning child in this area. Traits you wouldnt expect to see in a child with ASD level 1. I'm really lost and don't know what to do as a mum as all I have to work with is book a GP appointment n see what happens n what they say in like 2 years. But I'd really rather try n work out these four areas of need and where my son needs help and support and strategies and how I learn what those are. And also help for me to talk to other mums when I've had to deal with a meltdown or a publicly embarrassing event like last night where I had to collect my child 4 minutes early from the Halloween party which meant I had to carry him kicking n screaming down the street because he didnt want to leave whilst every other parent was walking in the other direction to collect there child from the party. N then deal with a 40 min meltdown because that was the response because he had to leave 4 mins before the end and he couldn't handle the sudden departure when everyone else was staying. He was asked to be collected due to kicking or trying to kick other children. Had had a time out. Was let back in and the immediately resumed the behaviour. He struggles with transitions and being in a free time environment like a playground. Or free play environment.
