Hi everyone, I’m hoping for some advice and support. I have a nine-year-old son who was diagnosed at five. We’ve been incredibly lucky and he’s had an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) for school ever since. However, as he’s getting older his outbursts are becoming more frequent. He refuses to do his work and when his PE lesson was cut short he kicked over the book case in school. He doesn’t behave this way at home; in fact, it’s the complete opposite. We have no issues with meltdowns at home; he’s calm, happy to help with chores and active. It’s just school that he absolutely despises. I’m really stressed right now because parents are commenting on his behaviour and it’s making things difficult. I know he’s a good kid who’s loved and supported and he knows right from wrong. He understands what he’s done is wrong but he just can’t stop himself. Is there any advice, help books or anything else I can do to support my son? On a side note, I took him to an open day at his high school, which he’ll be attending in two years, and he absolutely loved it. He knew there would be more structure, for example, he’d only have an hour of maths before moving on to another lesson and everything was so much clearer. So I’m thinking is the lack of structure in primary school a contributing factor to his outbursts?
