SEN Functional Skills Level 1 in Maths

Good day,

We are new to the group and any feedback you can provide will be much appreciated.  Our son is 22 year old with ASD.

Our son wishes to continue his education by completing Functional Skills Level 1 in maths (he no longer has an EHC Plan) and has a good grasp of maths skills.  His main area of difficulty lies within the superfluous language of the questions as he has an expressive/receptive language disorder.

We were wondering if anyone has experience or could advise us on this matter.  We have approached several main stream settings, however, they only offer basic, generic support instead of focussing on the young persons areas of difficulties.

Has anyone gone down the on-line route and what is your opinions on that?

  • I can't help with the online route, but my daughter has found the functional maths harder because the questions tend to be wordier then the GCSE questions. She has trouble understanding what the actual calculation she has to do is, but she also had that trouble with the GCSE papers.

    The college she's at have looked at using a different exam board (tquk.org)for functional maths this year as they think the questions are easier to understand.

    I'll be interested in seeing if anyone else has some relevant information on things they've found helpful.
