New diagnosis

Can anyone give me some tips to help my son. He has successfully masked his ASD and so has only now had it acknowledged at the age of 23.  He is going frightened as he does not understand who he is? Any resources/ideas/advice would be welcomed.

  • Hello IPet.

It sounds as though what your son is experiencing makes quite a lot of sense, a large change in relation to how we understand ourselves could be incredibly frightening to go through, potentially losing a sense of direction towards the person we are. It sounds as though you are doing your best as a caring parent, to offer support - I know for a fact that I experienced a temporary sense of disorientation, upon receiving my diagnosis.

While I am sure that our community will have some fantastic feedback to provide, I would like to provide you with a handful of NAS approved resources, in the meantime.

After diagnosis - A selection of resources relating to responding to a diagnosis.

Autism Services Directory - A directory of services located around the UK, many of which offer in person support

Parent to Parent Emotional Support Helpline - Our parent to parent support line.

Going forwards, I wish the best for yourself and your son - working through these things is never particularly easy.

    Thanks - Zac Mod.
