Feel left behind by the education system. Again.

I just need to vent as I am again feeling ignored and left behind for my daughter who is 16.

A lot of context, she has barely attended school in years 8, 9 and 10, we struggled to get support as she was awaiting an assessment, she went to 4 different secondary schools and received minimal support for her EBA, and her struggles to follow instruction, rules which lead to melt downs ( where she would lock herself in the toilets).  She was told by schools she was defiant, she was regularly put in isolation and received internal suspensions. We finally received her diagnosis last month after 4 years of waiting and after she had finished secondary school

Her year 11 mocks grades were low, just about achieved passes as yr 11 was the first time she started to attend regularly (the 4th school) and the first time she sat any form of exam.  She applied for 2 colleges she really wanted to go mainly for social communication reasons as this is her biggest barrier.  She didn't get either offer due to predicted grades and we were put on waiting list and told to email grades in August if they were higher.

She achieved GRADE 8s in her GCSEs which is a absolutely amazing and a huge indicator that if she feels ok in the right environment she can succeed.

The two colleges have said they cannot offer her a place, I understand places become full, but what is the point in waiting lists?

I have literally been begging both colleges to review her application in light of diagnosis and exceptional grades and I am given the same robotic replies.

She is completely devasted and I just feel so sad for her and angry that again she will be left behind as every system in society is built for able, neurotypical people no matter how good their SEN statements are on websites.

  • Hi

I think your and your daughter's experience distressing and understandably frustrating.

The robotic replies are increasing with digital blocks on access that once people in charge of would have had to face as personal decisions instead of "computer said no" reactions.

For what it's worth I personally, and others I have known, have followed a less than directly linear path thro' the education system.  I'm not suggesting give up on your daughter getting into the next stage of education this year but saying there are other courses and one can always move back to other paths at other stages of the journey.

    Best Wishes

  • Thankyou for your reply, and yes I am hoping we find a path for her
