Stimming is becoming too much

My 3 year old was diagnosed earlier this year and he constantly stims by jumping up and down and running around. It is starting to get a bit too much and we struggle to calm him down. We also live in a flat above a shop and the jumping causes an awful lot of noise and vibration. We've tried different activities but he doesn't have a very long attention span. He also doesn't look where he is going when he is running around and constantly bumps into the sofa where my husband sits who has recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and also has ME/CFS and it causes him pain every time the sofa gets bumped into.

Any suggestions as to what we can try to get him to calm down and if there's anyone we can speak to about it. I have mentioned it to our OT but they didn't say much about it.

It's as you say - while your child's preferred stim may be useful for them, that is not say it is without consequence, bordering on problematic for other persons to manage.

It shows that you are trying your best in this situation to create an outcome that works for everyone. While I can see that our community has begun to make recommendations, I wonder if any of the following resources may be of use:

Repeated movements and behaviour (stimming) - A brief guide to stimming.

Social care - Potentially social care services may be able to provide support here?

Parent to Parent Emotional Support Helpline - The NAS provide a parent to parent support line service.

Autism Services Directory - A directory for services located around the UK.

Ask ASH (Autism Support Helper) - For all other queries, perhaps ASH may be able to turn up results.

I wish you the best in finding a way to take control of this situation.
