Stimming is becoming too much

My 3 year old was diagnosed earlier this year and he constantly stims by jumping up and down and running around. It is starting to get a bit too much and we struggle to calm him down. We also live in a flat above a shop and the jumping causes an awful lot of noise and vibration. We've tried different activities but he doesn't have a very long attention span. He also doesn't look where he is going when he is running around and constantly bumps into the sofa where my husband sits who has recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and also has ME/CFS and it causes him pain every time the sofa gets bumped into.

Any suggestions as to what we can try to get him to calm down and if there's anyone we can speak to about it. I have mentioned it to our OT but they didn't say much about it.

  • I hope this doesn't come across in any other way as well-meaning, but have you thought about buying a trampette or something where the need is met without the noise?

Might be worth researching other tools to meet vestibular or proprioceptive needs to see if there's something you could substitute in.

In my experience these needs change/develop over time too, so I'd look for something safer and less noisy that meets the same need. (Or rather I would and my partner would tell me she'd already do e it and there's one on the way!)
