Aggression issues

Hi everyone,

My 5 year old son was diagnosed with autism this year and I am finding it difficult managing his aggression.

Before, he would mask when we were out in public and would then become aggressive with me when he was home and in his 'safe space' however that is no longer the case. Any day trip will result in me having to go somewhere quiet whilst I am slapped, bit, punched, spat on or things are launched at me. It can get to the stage ill have to restrain him as he is a safety risk to himself and others. Recently he'll hit his head off walls, pick at his nails and pull his hair so redirects to self harm as well as hurting me. I can't go anywhere without my mum or husband helping as I now have severe anxiety and worry before we are even out the door about what could go wrong that day.

I know I shouldn't however I get overwhelmed with people watching and judging. Had someone last week make a comment how it's bad behaviour and a good smack would sort that out.

I understand some times it can start with typical 5 year old defiance however the aftermath can't be a simple tantrum.

School is the only place where he doesn't seem to show any of thus behaviour - they were surprised when I had a meeting with them about it. It seems to all happen when I am with him and something causes him to react, like having to share with his cousin, being hungry or even something like needing to pee.

Does anyone have any advice for this worn out mum? Feel like a bit of a failure to be honest. I can't seem to find anything that helps him settle apart from time - longest has been a 4 hour outburst. I've got a display timetable, fidget toys, weighted blankets, spinning chairs - the lot basically. There just isn't any way of communicating with him until he almost comes out of it on his own and becomes his usual loving wee self. Bit of a Jekyl and Hyde situation.

TIA
